Description:
BOSTON LIFE 1904-1951 Boston Life in the first half of the Twentieth Century, preserved on film. This DVD compilation, much of it in colour, and including rare film footage never previously available, covers events from 1904 - the oldest known motion picture ever taken in Boston - to the Borough's celebrations during the 1951 Festival of Britain. From the war years, there's the Home Guard of course, and the V.E. Celebrations including the May Fair. Highlights from pre-war days include the Proclamation of George V in 1910, Empire Day in 1928 with its mile-long procession of children, the Hospital fund-raising carnival in 1932, and the Silver Jubilee in 1935.
You'll see Boston at work - in fishing boats and factories, markets and machine shops; and at play - skating, swimming, rowing, bowling, grass track racing, and even flying. Scene after scene will have you reaching for the "Still" button, as you recognise those once-familiar faces and places - vanished buildings, well-known landmarks, the shops you knew as a child, old friends, parents, brothers, sisters - and who knows, perhaps even yourself!
